Federal Grants to For-Profit Companies Excluding Amtrak

Latest

17.7$ billions

Methodology

## What this measures

Grant obligations (award types 02 to 05) to USAspending's Business recipients, minus those to the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak). A Palanor subtraction of two USAspending totals.

## Why it matters

Amtrak's grants have dominated this category since FY2016; without them the series shows money going to private companies.

## How to read it

The series starts in FY2008 at $3.6 billion. The latest reading, for FY2025, is $17.7 billion. The high is $20.9 billion (FY2010) and the low $3.6 billion (FY2008). A fiscal year appears from 1 December, two months after it ends, and can still rise as late reports and corrections arrive.

## What it does not say

The subtraction removes only the recipient named National Railroad Passenger Corporation. Obligations are commitments, not cash paid out. Contracts are a separate series (usaspending-contract-obligations); loans and tax credits are not grants and are not here.
