Federal Grants to For-Profit Companies (Annual)

Latest

32.86$ billions

Methodology

## What this measures

Grant obligations (block, formula and project grants and cooperative agreements, award types 02 to 05) to recipients in USAspending's Business category: small businesses and for-profit organizations other than small businesses. Net of deobligations, by fiscal year (October to September).

## Why it matters

Most federal grants go to states, local governments, universities and nonprofits; the slice that goes to companies shows when policy pays businesses directly.

## How to read it

The series starts in FY2008 at $3.7 billion. The latest reading, for FY2025, is $32.9 billion. The high is $32.9 billion (FY2025) and the low $3.7 billion (FY2008). A fiscal year appears from 1 December, two months after it ends, and can still rise as late reports and corrections arrive.

## What it does not say

It includes Amtrak, a federally chartered for-profit corporation whose federal grants are reported to this category; the ex-Amtrak series removes it. Obligations are commitments, not cash paid out. Contracts are a separate series (usaspending-contract-obligations); loans and tax credits are not grants and are not here.
