Vietnam's share of US goods imports (12 months)

Latest

7.04pct

Methodology

## What this measures

This measures imports from Vietnam as a share of all US goods imports over the trailing twelve months. It shows Vietnam's weight in the total flow of goods entering the United States.

## Background

Imports from Vietnam as a share of all US goods imports, trailing 12 months.

Σ12 US goods imports from the partner ÷ Σ12 US goods imports from the world × 100, Census FT-900 via FRED (IMP5520, IMP0004). Read alongside China's share: China falling while Vietnam and Mexico rise is partly trade rerouted through them, not only decoupling. Computed monthly by /api/cron/fred-composites.

## Why it matters

A rising share signals that Vietnam is becoming a more important source of supply for US markets, which matters for procurement strategy, tariff exposure and supply-chain diversification. Organizations relying on goods from China or other Asian exporters should track this to understand where production is shifting and where new dependencies may form. Changes in this share often reflect not only organic growth but also the rerouting of trade through Vietnam in response to tariffs or geopolitical pressure.

## How to read it

A rise means Vietnam accounts for a larger fraction of US imports; a fall means its share is shrinking. Compare this series to China's share of US imports to identify whether growth in Vietnam reflects supply chains moving out of China or independent expansion. The twelve-month window smooths month-to-month noise and shows the underlying trend.

## What it does not say

This does not say how much trade is original Vietnamese production versus goods transshipped or assembled from components made elsewhere. It also does not indicate the composition of imports or which industries are driving the change.

## Source

Palanor computes this series monthly by dividing US goods imports from Vietnam by total US goods imports, both over a trailing twelve-month window, using Census FT-900 data published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Palanor pulls the underlying series from the FRED API nightly.
