Share of U.S. Household Net Worth: 99th–99.9th Percentile
Latest
17.5%
Methodology
## What this measures
The percentage of total U.S. household net worth (assets less debts) held by households between the 99th and 99.9th percentiles of wealth (the rest of the top 1%). Quarterly since 1989 Q3.
## Why it matters
The top 1% series (wealth.dfa.share_top1) combines two groups that behave differently: the very top holds most of its wealth in private businesses and stocks, the rest of the top 1% more in real estate and pensions. Splitting them shows where the concentration is.
## How to read it
Shares of one whole: with the next 0.9%, the 90th–99th, the 50th–90th and the bottom 50%, they add to 100. Stock-market rallies raise the top 0.1% share; house-price gains raise the middle.
## What it does not say
The DFA spread the Financial Accounts totals across households using the triennial Survey of Consumer Finances, so groups between survey years are modelled, not surveyed, and the newest quarters are revised. Wealth is at market value, before tax, nominal (not adjusted for inflation).
