265.87% of disposable income
Methodology
## What this measures
The net financial wealth of households in Malta: deposits, bonds, shares, investment funds, pension and insurance claims and other financial assets, minus loans and other liabilities, as a percentage of the households' gross disposable income (adjusted for the change in pension entitlements). Households include the non-profit institutions serving them. Housing and other real assets are not counted. Annual from 1995; each value is dated December 31.
## Why it matters
It shows how large households' financial cushion is relative to their income: how many years of income their net savings and investments would cover. Rising ratios point to growing financial wealth (often from rising share prices); falling ratios to more debt or weaker markets.
## How to read it
Higher means a bigger net financial cushion. 300% means net financial assets of three years' disposable income. Compare a country with the EU (wealth.eurostat.hh_net_fin_assets_pct_gdi.eu27) and with its own history; market swings move it year to year.
## What it does not say
It excludes homes, the main asset of most households, so countries with high home ownership and mortgage debt can look poor on this measure. Funded pension systems (the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden) raise it; pay-as-you-go pensions are not counted. It is an average and says nothing about how wealth is spread. Latest years are often provisional.
