Methodology

## What this measures

Number of domestically incorporated companies listed on Chinese exchanges at year end.

## Background

Number of domestically incorporated companies listed on Chinese exchanges at year end.

World Federation of Exchanges data via the World Bank (CM.MKT.LDOM.NO). Covers the Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing exchanges; the World Bank series runs higher than counts of A-share companies alone. Annual.

## Why it matters

The count reflects the depth of China's public equity market and the pipeline of capital-raising opportunities for institutional investors. A rising trajectory signals policy support for listings and an expanding universe of tradable companies; a sustained decline points to delisting pressure, regulatory constraints or a shift toward private capital.

## How to read it

A higher count means more listed companies and a broader market. Compare year-over-year changes to identify phases of market expansion or contraction, and compare the series to market capitalization to gauge whether growth is adding large firms or small ones.

## What it does not say

It does not say how many companies went public or delisted during the year, the market value of listed firms, or trading activity.
