capital-flows
Vietnam — FDI inflows (% of GDP)
Latest
4.27% of GDP
Methodology
## What this measures
Net inflows of foreign direct investment into Vietnam, expressed as a percentage of GDP. The series captures equity capital, reinvested earnings and intra-company loans from foreign investors establishing or expanding business operations in the country.
## Why it matters
Changes in FDI as a share of output signal shifts in Vietnam's attractiveness for cross-border manufacturing, services and infrastructure investment. Organizations with supply chains in Southeast Asia can use the series to track whether capital is deepening Vietnam's industrial base or moving toward other markets. Sustained inflows indicate expanding productive capacity; declines may reflect rising costs, policy uncertainty or competitor destinations gaining ground.
## How to read it
A rising percentage means foreign investment is growing faster than the economy or GDP is contracting. A falling percentage means investment is slowing relative to output or GDP is expanding faster. Compare across years to identify trends in Vietnam's position as a destination for multinational capital.
## What it does not say
The series does not break out investment by sector, country of origin or project type. It does not indicate whether inflows finance new greenfield projects or acquisitions of existing assets.
