Canada’s Electricity Emissions Intensity by Province and Territory

Greenhouse gas emitted per kWh of electricity generated, latest year, grams of CO2 equivalent

Nunavut leads at 740
Current·Data to 2024

Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where a new leader takes first place.

Environment and Climate Change Canada, National Inventory Report (Open Government Licence – Canada). Grams of CO2 equivalent per kWh generated by public power producers; the newest year is preliminary. Power imported from a neighbour counts where it was made.

The same kWh carries very different emissions across Canada. Provinces that run on hydro sit far below the rest; those that burn coal, gas or diesel emit hundreds of grams for every kWh.
