Bank for International Settlements, central bank total assets statistics: assets at the end of each quarter as a share of annual GDP, as the BIS compiles them. The Eurosystem is the ECB and the euro-area national central banks. The six largest central banks are drawn in coral. Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand hold mostly foreign-exchange reserves.

How big each central bank’s balance sheet is next to its economy. The Swiss National Bank and the Bank of Japan hold assets close to a year of GDP; the Federal Reserve, for all its size in dollars, holds far less relative to the U.S. economy.
