Gaza at Night Since October 2023
Mean night-time light over the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, nW/cm²/sr, monthly
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.
Gaza Strip · Continuation · the recent trend, flattening · 30 days
West Bank · Continuation · the recent trend, flattening · 30 days
Dashed: the projection from the latest reading. Shaded: the range about two in three outcomes land in. A projection, not a promise.
Source: NASA Black Marble VNP46A3 (LAADS DAAC), monthly moonlight- and atmosphere-corrected night-time radiance from VIIRS on Suomi NPP. Palanor calculation: the area-weighted mean over each place's land, built by NASA from clear, snow-free nights, with pixels that had none filled with their latest good value; only light at or above 2 nW/cm²/sr counts, which leaves out a faint background glow in recent years. Boundaries: Natural Earth. The Gaza Strip is about 340 km² of land on Natural Earth's line, under 2,000 pixels.
The Gaza Strip's lights from space: steady before October 2023, then a collapse as power was cut and fuel ran out, with the West Bank alongside.
