Palanor calculation. Each age group’s spending basket from the BLS Consumer Expenditure Surveys (age of the household’s reference person), repriced with CPI-U component indexes, reweighted every year with a two-year lag as the CPI does. Owner housing is priced by owners’ equivalent rent. Generations by birth year as of the latest survey year.

How each generation’s inflation gap to the average household has moved month by month since January 2019, through the 2021 to 2023 price surge and after. Gaps open when the things one group buys most, such as rent, cars or fuel, move faster than the rest.
