Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where a new leader takes first place.

Palanor calculation. Each age group’s spending basket from the BLS Consumer Expenditure Surveys (age of the household’s reference person), repriced with CPI-U component indexes, reweighted every year with a two-year lag as the CPI does. Owner housing is priced by owners’ equivalent rent. Generations by birth year as of the latest survey year.

How much prices have risen since January 2019 for the basket each generation actually buys. Older households spend more on medical care and the homes they own; younger ones on rent, eating out, cars and tuition. The bars are close together because housing, food and transport are large for everyone.
