France leads at 117M

Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where a new leader takes first place.

World Bank WDI (CC BY 4.0), compiled from UN Tourism data. The World Bank publishes no year after 2020, the first year of the pandemic. Arrivals, not people. Countries count differently: most count every visitor at the border, including same-day visitors; Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Malaysia count only overnight tourists, the first three only those staying in accommodation, so their figures are not comparable with the rest. Poland, Thailand, Czechia, Canada, Saudi Arabia and India have no 2020 figure and are not shown.

Where international visitors went in the latest year the World Bank publishes, which is 2020, when the pandemic closed borders. The companion chart sets each country’s figure beside the year before.
