International Tourist Arrivals: the Latest Year and the Year Before
Arrivals of international visitors in the twelve countries with the most before the pandemic, the two latest years the World Bank publishes
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.
World Bank WDI (CC BY 4.0), compiled from UN Tourism data. The World Bank publishes no year after 2020, the first year of the pandemic. Arrivals, not people. Countries count differently: most of these count every visitor at the border, including same-day visitors; Germany counts only overnight tourists staying in accommodation, so its figure is not comparable with the rest. Poland and Thailand have no 2020 figure and are not shown. The faint bar is the earlier year.
How far international travel fell in each country between the last year before the pandemic and the first year of it, from the World Bank’s latest published figures.
