UN DESA, International Migrant Stock 2024 (CC BY 3.0 IGO). Migrants are people living outside the country of their birth, or foreign citizens where a country records only citizenship; refugees are included. Mid-year estimates, every five years to 2020, then 2024. The change is each year’s share minus the share in 2000 (Palanor calculation). Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco and San Marino are not coloured.

Where in Europe people born abroad make up a larger or smaller share of the population than in 2000. The share rose across most of Western and Northern Europe and fell in Serbia, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania. Use the slider to step through the UN’s estimates.
