Federal Reserve Board, Distributional Financial Accounts. Household net worth (assets less debts) at market value, nominal. Groups are fixed shares of households: the top 0.1% is a thousandth of them, the bottom 50% half.
About 130,000 households at the very top against the bottom half of the country, about 66 million. The top 0.1% holds most of its wealth in stocks and private businesses, so its share rises with the stock market; the bottom half holds mostly homes and cars, net of mortgages and other debt.
