Long-term immigration minus emigration, rolling 12 months, people: EU+, non-EU+ and British nationals
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.
Office for National Statistics, long-term international migration, provisional (OGL v3.0). Each bar is a rolling 12-month period ending in the quarter shown, rounded by ONS to the thousand. ONS changed its methods from the year ending June 2021, when the estimates moved to administrative data, and advises care when comparing periods before and after that point; the EU+ group adds Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland from then. The latest periods are provisional and will be revised.
Net migration to the UK split by nationality, from the Office for National Statistics. EU+ nationals made up the largest part until 2018 and have been net departures since mid-2022; non-EU+ nationals account for the rise to the 2023 peak and most of the fall since; in every period more British nationals left than returned. Bars above zero are net arrivals, below zero net departures.
