Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers, change from a year earlier, %, the last two years
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, CPI-U, seasonally adjusted (public domain). Each bar is the index against the same month a year earlier, calculated by Palanor; BLS states its headline 12-month rate on the unadjusted index, so a month can differ by a tenth. BLS published no index for October 2025 (the 2025 lapse in appropriations), so that month has no bar, and October 2026 will have none a year later.
How fast U.S. consumer prices have been rising over the last two years, one bar per monthly report. The long-run view, with core inflation, is on the U.S. Inflation chart.
