U.S. Payroll Jobs: Women vs Men Since the Pandemic

Change in nonfarm payroll jobs since February 2020, thousands

Women: 459 in Sep 2026the highest in data back to 2025+459 since Aug 2025

Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Current Employment Statistics, seasonally adjusted. BLS publishes payroll jobs held by women; jobs held by men are total nonfarm payrolls less those (Palanor calculation). Payrolls count jobs, so a person with two jobs counts twice.

How many payroll jobs women and men have gained or lost since the last month before the pandemic. Both fell in spring 2020; the lines show which recovered first and which is adding jobs now. Health care and education employ more women, construction and manufacturing more men, so the gap follows which industries are hiring.
