Women's Share of Workers in the Occupations With the Most Openings

Women as a share of employed people, the 20 occupations with the most projected openings, %

Secretaries and admin assistants leads at 91.9%
Current·Data to 2025

Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where a new leader takes first place.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Openings: Employment Projections, the average a year over the ten-year projection, counting new jobs and replacements for workers who retire or change occupation. Women and men: Palanor calculation, openings times each sex's share of the occupation's workers in the Current Population Survey for the projection's base year, so they show who would fill the openings if each occupation hires in today's mix. The CPS has no separate rows for restaurant cooks, heavy truck drivers or security guards; their shares are for all cooks, all truck drivers and guards with gambling surveillance officers.

Who does the jobs that will hire the most. Women hold the great majority of secretarial, nursing and housekeeping jobs and very few truck-driving jobs, so the mix of openings shapes the job market for women and men differently.
