Lithuania's defense officials stated this week that Russia is falsifying GPS signals at ranges that extend deep into European airspace and maritime corridors, according to Reuters. The statement does not specify technical parameters or geographic reach, but the public attribution is itself significant. GPS spoofing and jamming have been documented in the Baltics since 2016, but named government warnings of cross-border operational impact represent a threshold shift in how NATO members are framing the threat.

The signal manipulation is occurring as the U.S. Department of Defense solicits advanced manufacturing technology for supersonic aircraft sustainment, per Inside Defense, and as the commercial aviation sector moves to secure alternative connectivity. SpaceX's Starlink secured a contract with American Airlines to equip more than 500 Airbus aircraft with satellite broadband, TechCrunch reported, marking another marquee customer ahead of the unit's anticipated IPO. The timing matters. Commercial aviation connectivity has historically been low-bandwidth and expensive; satellite constellations in low Earth orbit offer higher throughput and lower latency, but they also represent a navigation backup architecture that does not depend on ground-based or GPS-derived positioning.

Separately, the European Union is considering allowing U.S.-based satellite operators including Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper to participate in its mobile satellite spectrum allocation plan, according to Reuters. The draft proposal has not been published, but the framing signals a shift in how Europe is weighing sovereignty versus capacity. The EU has its own satellite ambitions—most notably the IRIS² constellation—but deployment timelines lag commercial offerings. The question is whether spectrum access becomes a lever for European industrial policy or a concession to operational necessity.

The Pentagon's request for advanced manufacturing capabilities for supersonic platforms suggests the U.S. is prioritizing production and maintenance infrastructure for high-speed aircraft, which require precision navigation and are especially vulnerable to GPS denial in contested environments. That aligns with ongoing DoD investment in inertial navigation systems and alternative positioning, navigation, and timing architectures. The published solicitation does not specify platforms, but the emphasis on manufacturing and sustainment rather than R&D implies near-term procurement.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration granted Volvo Cars—majority-owned by China's Geely Holdings—permission to continue selling connected vehicles in the United States, TechCrunch reported. The decision follows a multi-month Commerce Department review of connected-vehicle security and supply-chain risk. The approval is narrow. It applies to Volvo's U.S. manufacturing expansion but does not set precedent for other Chinese-linked automakers. The distinction between a Swedish brand with Chinese ownership and a Chinese-headquartered firm is being preserved in enforcement, and that distinction is policy, not accident.

The through-line across this coverage is not technology; it is control. GPS falsification at scale forces allies to name the threat and invest in alternatives. Spectrum allocation becomes a sovereignty test when the only viable near-term providers are U.S. firms. Connected-vehicle approvals hinge on corporate structure and manufacturing geography, not software architecture alone. The regulatory surface is widening, and compliance is the chokepoint the market has not yet fully priced.
