Line
Belgium and Canada: U.S. Treasury Holdings
U.S. Treasury securities held in each country, end of month, $ billions
Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.
Source: U.S. Treasury, Treasury International Capital (TIC) system. Holdings are recorded by where the securities are held in custody, so Belgium (Euroclear) and other financial centres hold Treasuries for owners elsewhere. Annual benchmark surveys re-base the series, which can move a level in a single month.
Treasuries held in Belgium, home of the Euroclear depository, and in Canada, month by month: custody, not necessarily ownership.
