Applications to start a business over the last twelve months per 100,000 residents, by state
Latest reading for each area, to Sep 2026 · Bins hold about equal counts
Plays the chart through its history, period by period.
U.S. Census Bureau, Business Formation Statistics (seasonally adjusted applications for an Employer Identification Number), summed over twelve months and divided by Census population estimates; the rate is Palanor’s arithmetic. An application counts in the state of the business address on the form, which can be a registered agent’s office rather than where the owner lives or the business operates.
Where in the United States people are filing to start new businesses, relative to the population. Each state is shaded by its rate over the past year; the legend gives each shade’s range. The U.S. monthly total is on the New Business Applications chart.
