Plays the chart through its history. Pauses are where the data set a record or moved most.

U.S. Department of Defense, Comptroller, National Defense Budget Estimates (Green Book), Table 6-3: total obligational authority by fiscal year, war and supplemental funding included. The Navy includes the Marine Corps and the Air Force the Space Force. Constant dollars use the Comptroller’s own deflators. Defense-wide covers agencies outside the three departments (health, missile defense, special operations).

Every defense budget since 1948 in today’s dollars, split among the Army, the Navy and Marine Corps, the Air Force and Space Force, and defense-wide agencies: the Korean War and Vietnam peaks, the 1980s build-up, the post-Cold War drawdown and the wars after 2001.
