Palanor calculation from FAOSTAT (CC BY 4.0), world, the latest year with both oil and area data. Palm counts palm and palm kernel oil; other oils are coconut, groundnut, olive, sesame, linseed and safflower. Cottonseed and maize oil are left out (by-products of fibre and grain crops). Land is all the land each crop is harvested from: soybeans, rapeseed and sunflower also yield meal and olives and coconuts are also eaten, so oil per hectare understates them.
Each crop’s share of the world’s oil-crop land beside its share of the vegetable oil produced. Palm gives about two-fifths of the oil from about a tenth of the land; soybeans take nearly half the land for a little over a quarter of the oil, because most of the soybean harvest is grown for meal.
